Let's Talk Worms...

For Vermicomposting (like that with Hungry Bin) you'll need to get worms to start the process.

What worms to get?
Red Wigglers.

Where do I get them?
In the USA, we recommend Uncle Jims Worm Farm

Why compost with worms?

Unlike regular composting, which relies on microorganisms, vermicomposting utilizes the digestive systems of worms to break down organic matter in a shorter amount of time with low odor and no heat needed.

With Hungry Bin this leads to two great byproducts for your garden:

Black Gold + Compost Tea.

Use Red Wiggler Worms!

What Goes In the Hungry Bin?

Scroll left to right  Good to Add Don't Add
Food Scraps (The Greens):
Kitchen Green Scraps, Fruit Peels, Veggie Scraps, Coffee Grounds, Tea Bags, and Bread.
Meat, Fish, Bones, Spicy or Salty Foods, Citrus Peels, Onions, Garlic, Moldy or Rotting Foods.
Why to Add or Not Add:
Green matter makes for a soft, moist environment that the worms thrive in. They turn your scraps into snacks.
These items can hurt the worms, create acidic conditions, lower the bin pH, create harmful bacteria, smells, and attract pests. Yuck!
Carbon Materials (The Browns):
Shredded newspaper, cardboard, dry leaves, straw, hay, and sawdust.
Green yard waste, glossy magazines or paper, glass, Styrofoam, paper towels with cleaning chemicals, plastic.
Why to Add or Not Add:
Carbon materials help balance the wet food scraps and prevent smells.
These materials can create an unbalanced and possibly harmful compost environment.
